Email marketing has become one of the main communication and sales tools in recent years. Adopted by companies of all sizes worldwide, some of its benefits include:

  • # Economy: low cost in comparison to other channels
  • # Ecology: the whole process operates in the digital environment, substituting paper
  • # Objectivity: assertive segmentation, communicating only with those you choose to
  • # Creation: campaigns are created by simply dragging and dropping elements
  • # Return: easily measurable results
  • # Relationships: increases engagement with the client.

Those who already use email marketing, especially advanced tools like E-goi, will already know about these, and many other advantages. To all the experts out there, we propose a challenge: solve the mystery by answering the following question…

Who sent the first email marketing campaign?

We’ll reveal the answer at the end of this post. Meanwhile, let’s look at some interesting figures.

Some email marketing statistics

  • #1 According to a report by Radacati, 4000 million people worldwide will use email by the year 2020. (Radicati)
  • #2 Of all those interviewed in Adobe’s annual survey, 69% say that they check their emails while watching films or TV. And 57% of them confirm that they check their emails while lying in bed.  (Adobe)
  • #3 More than 86% of companies interviewed said they intend to increase their email marketing budgets. (Email on Acid)
  • #4 49% of businessmen confirm that email is directly linked to their main source of business income. (Salesforce)
  • #5 Companies that send automated emails are 133% more likely to send content that is relevant to their client’s sales cycle. (Lenskold and Pedowitz Groups)
  • #6 Email is way ahead of other social media giants. When it comes to gaining new clients, it is 40% more effective than Facebook or Twitter. (McKinsey and Company)
  • #7 Improve your opt-out rate by only 0.1%, and you will save 1000 subscribers whenever you email a list of 1 million people. This means that you hold on to more than 200,000 contacts over a one-year period, if you send 4 emails a week. (IBM Marketing Cloud)

Did you manage to solve the mystery?

In 1978, Gary Thuerk of Digital Equipment Corporation – DEC (an extinct American computer manufacturer), sent the first mass email campaign to around 400 potential clients of ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), promoting the DECSYSTEM-20 product.  The campaign generated sales worth $13 million and roused even further interest in email as a marketing activity.

Some suggest that this campaign was the first SPAM ever sent, as nobody expected to receive a sales email. Which also resulted in a negative reaction and being blocked by many users.
