Exactly, the majority of people rarely check it. One of the great challenges of email marketing is avoiding that your emails end up in the users’ spam folder. If you send emails to your list and some of them end up in spam, you’re losing potential clients:

Tip #1: Whitelisting

What is whitelisting? A whitelist is basically a list of domains considered safe and genuine by email services (ISP), such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo. If you can get onto the safe list of these email services, it is less likely that the emails you send will end up in users’ spam folders.

By using a professional email marketing service (I use E-goi), your mailings will be already be on the whitelists of the main email systems. But if you send them yourself, with your own IP, this article explains how you can get your email address and domain onto Hotmail’s whitelist. Even then, if your emails are too promotional or look like spam, the domain will eventually de considered as a spammer and will be removed from the list. Apart from that, each email account also has its own personal whitelist.

Make the most of this facility by requesting that users add you to their list, so that they don’t miss your important emails. Whether they use Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo or any other email system, users will always have the option of adding an email address to their safe sender list, so go ahead and ask them! You have nothing to lose.

Tip #2: Don’t speak “spammese”

There are many reasons why an email will end up in the spam folder, but sometimes it can be simply because of the way the email is written. Gmail, Hotmail and the like have automatic detectors that decide when an email is to be considered as spam.

Most email marketing services include options (eg. spam score) to analyse if your email contact is spam through its HTML coding or by the words used. Avoid using repetitive words that can be promotional (such as “free” or “cheap”), don’t overuse words with CAPITAL LETTERS or coloured text. Use common sense and write emails that look professional.

Tip #3: Update your list

Just as we shouldn’t neglect our spring cleaning, we should always update our mailing lists regularly. Check that you’re not sending emails to addresses that no longer exist, as they will produce bounces which will harm your delivery rate.

Spammers send numerous emails to large lists, and not to segments or smaller lists, as is the case with most legitimate companies. If an ISP spots that emails are being sent to invalid addresses, it will give your domain a higher spam score, meaning that any future emails you send will end up in subscribers’ spam folders.

The best course of action is to keep your lists clean and up-to-date, restricting the number of invalid addresses to a minimum.

Tip #4: Don’t send mass emails too quickly

Another behavioural aspect that email services like Hotmail and Gmail watch out for is the number of emails you are sending. If you send mass emails to thousands of people at once, your email (and your sender address) could be considered as spam.

Send your emails at longer time intervals, and to less people at the time. And confirm that these people have voluntarily subscribed to your list (preferably via a form) and that they have whitelisted you. Also take care with the speed that you send your emails! If you do this manually with your own IP address, pay attention to the acceptable speed limits for each ISP and never exceed them.

If you use E-goi for mailing, the speed will be automatically adjusted in line with these limits.

Tip #5: Image sizes

Including images in your emails is perfectly acceptable, especially as they make the content more attractive. But it’s important to pay attention to their size! ISPs normally associate large images with spam, as many spam emails contain one single image along with words like “free” in capital letters. It’s almost like a huge unwanted advertising flyer, but in an email format.

If email systems such as Hotmail and Gmail cannot identify text in your email, it will probably be considered as spam. Therefore, use appropriately sized images and always use text in the body of the email.

João Alexandre

João Alexandre é consultor e estratega digital, usando marketing e criatividade em novas formas de envolver o consumidor moderno.

blog.e-goi.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/joao_alexandre.jpg

Yippee! A lot has changed since then, with the mighty appearance of social media networks and the rise of mobile devices.

But in marketing terms, there are many things that haven’t changed: email is still the king of the jungle. Many clients who make repeat purchases, do so because of email. They are reminded that the company still exists through this marketing channel.

According to “Email Trends and Benchmarks Report” by Epilson and the Email Institute, the email opening rate is almost 30% with respect to the first months of 2013, which represents almost a 4% rise in comparison to the first months of 2012.

Email opening rates will rise… and it’s all because of smart phones

Nevertheless, on the contrary to what some people think, the opening rate is rising. One of the reasons for this is mobile phone devices. Permission marketing techniques, or inbound marketing, have also changed the way in which we send emails to our potential clients.

Instead of simply sending an email offering a free consultation or a small discount, by sending educational content, such as a guide, report, or e-book, helps us to keep leads engaged with you until they are ready or capable of buying.

The same principle can be used when we want a user to subscribe to our list, in which we present some useful content (guide or other) in exchange for their data. But what comes after the initial engagement? The client or potential client may not know what to do next. It’s your responsibility to make sure that the lead is ready and capable when you offer them the chance to move further down your sales funnel.

Here are some tips help you guide your leads through this process instead of expecting them to know what to do:

Segment

Segmentation is important. Your subscribers expect you to send them relevant content. Create your segments, try to define your list by specific groups. A campaign sent to 400 people could have an opening rate of 15%, whilst one sent 4000 people could have one 1.5%.

It’s the same number of people but with less bored subscribers.

Don’t be afraid to send frequent emails

What is a lot for some people, can be a little for others. Lists that are more segmented can allow the opportunity to send more messages in less time.

One offer per email

If your segmented lists are small, and your emails frequent, you only need to feature one offer per email. Personalising a newsletter with several offers and potential actions for each segmented group can reduce the efficiency of offers in general, apart from possibly being a poor use of your time.

People get confused when they have too many options. Concentrate on just one.

Tell a story

When somebody signs up for your newsletter through one of your incentives (a guide, you remember, right?), you can carry on presenting them with information of their interest with emails that follow up and remind them that you and your company exist. But instead of just forcing offers on them, tell them a story.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be related to your industry or product/service, however if it is, it helps.

Ask the subscriber to do something

Always give the subscriber the opportunity to take some kind of action which also meets your objectives. What is your ultimate goal? That they buy your product? That they request your service? Lead the subscriber to take some form of action via the footer image on your email, or via a call to action with a link taking them to a page on your website.

If you don’t, you’re losing a good opportunity to convert and lead into a client, especially if they are ready and capable of buying.

João Alexandre

João Alexandre é consultor e estratega digital, usando marketing e criatividade em novas formas de envolver o consumidor moderno.

blog.e-goi.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/joao_alexandre.jpg

Use Email Segmentation to Increase your Opening Rate

João Alexandre

Email Marketing

Increase your Opening Rate One day, while I was drinking my morning coffee, I had a quick look through the 79 emails in my inbox, and one of them attracted my attention. As a sportsperson, my curiosity led me to open the email. This was the only email I opened out of all 79 emails. I don’t think I need to tell you what happened to the other 78 emails.

So what was so special about that email that stopped it going to the recycling bin with all the rest? I like doing physical exercise and in the previous week I had searched for some exercises used by some stars of the cinema, which apart from being intense and sometimes unrealistic for normal people to perform, they are interesting.

The company sent me that email, with that title, created a message that captivated me. It’s much easier to create a generic email for our whole list, but this won’t produce great results. Whilst the majority of marketers agree that personalising email is important, many companies do not tap into the power of personalisation.

Personalisation – much more than the name

Companies that make the effort to take that extra step of personalising their email campaigns are those that reap the best results. With the tools that are available to entrepreneurs and marketers today, creating personalised emails for their target market is well within reach.

Personalisation is more than just including the first person´s name in the title or the body of the email text. A truly personalised email addresses the subscriber directly, the dreams they wish to fulfil, the problems they want to solve, their preferences, their fears, and relevant to their particular stage in the sales funnel cycle.

Creating buyer personas is a good way of finding out the preferences of your buyers, their pains, fears, etc. Segmenting your clients can make more sense than just sending a single message to the general public with a general offer. By personalising your emails you will increase engagement with your subscribers and as a consequence, increase conversions.

You can also read 5 Tips to Create Emails that Will be Read.

João Alexandre

João Alexandre é consultor e estratega digital, usando marketing e criatividade em novas formas de envolver o consumidor moderno.

blog.e-goi.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/joao_alexandre.jpg
