Discover how benchmarking in Google Analytics 4 can give your business a unique competitive advantage. Learn how to compare metrics and improve your digital strategy.

One thing is certain: only looking at our own data can be an ego trip. “We had 30,000 sessions this month!” — Okay, cool. But… what about the rest of the market? Are they at 50,000? 5,000?

This is where Benchmarking in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) comes in—a new feature already available in your account that lets you compare your site’s performance with similar companies. And no, it’s not magic—it’s smart data analysis.

Ready to dive in?

What is benchmarking in Google Analytics 4?

Benchmarking is a feature that allows you to compare your website’s performance with the market, based on:

Industry category

Geographic region

Traffic volume

Instead of guessing whether you’re doing well or not, GA4 shows you the market median, the range between the 25th and 75th percentiles, and where you stand. This way, you can clearly see where you excel and where you might be missing opportunities

See more: The Complete Guide to Filtering AI Traffic in Google Analytics 4

How to use benchmarking in Google Analytics 4

Follow these quick steps:

Go to the GA4 home page.

In the overview card, choose the metric you want to analyze.

Click to expand the Benchmarking section.

Select the metric you want to compare.

From there, GA4 displays:

Solid line = your performance

Dotted line = the median of your comparison group

Shaded area = the range between the 25th and 75th percentiles

What can you compare?

Here are some interesting metrics you can (and should) analyze:

New user rate

Average session duration

Engagement rate

Views per session

Bounce rate

Active users (DAU/WAU/MAU)

Average revenue per user (ARPU)

These are just some of the possible metrics, but GA4 offers much more—things get even more interesting when you start cross-referencing metrics with campaigns.

Customizing your comparison group

Not all markets are the same—comparing a jewelry e-commerce site with a delivery app just doesn’t make sense. That’s why GA4 lets you customize:

Industry category

Geographic location

Traffic volume

Real example:
If your company receives traffic from Portugal and Brazil, GA4 will compare you with similar businesses in those countries. If you have 30,000 users/month, it will group you with companies in the same traffic range (e.g., 10k–50k).

Important note: You can’t choose specific companies (Google protects others’ identities). You only have access to aggregated data, which is more than enough to understand the overall landscape.

Why is benchmarking in GA4 so useful?

As a PPC Manager, this is gold,

You can see if your campaigns are really bringing in more qualified traffic (with higher average session time, for example), or if you’re just pouring water into a leaky bucket.

You can also align your content strategy based on metrics where the market is performing better.
For example, if the market has a bounce rate of 35% and you’re at 60%, it’s a sign something on your site needs fixing.

Data-Driven decisions (not just a feeling)

According to Google, Benchmarking helps companies make more informed decisions, based on real industry data.

A Deloitte study revealed that companies using benchmarking are 45% more likely to report faster growth compared to competitors.

And according to MarketingProfs, 67% of marketers who use benchmarking feel more confident in their strategic decisions.

Conclusion

Benchmarking in Google Analytics 4 is like an X-ray mirror: it shows us more than just our reflection—it reveals where we’re shining and where we need a strategic tune-up.

If you’re like me and want strong arguments to justify decisions, enable this feature now.

It’s simple, free, and incredibly useful.

This article demonstrates, in a practical way, how to filter traffic from AI tools such as ChatGPT and OpenAI in Google Analytics 4 using regular expressions.

In the context of digital marketing, it is crucial to obtain detailed insights about the traffic arriving at your website. If part of that traffic originates from Artificial Intelligence tools (such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, OpenAI, among others), it can be advantageous to filter these sources in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to better understand the impact of these tools on your business.

In this article, I will show you how to use regular expressions (regex) in GA4 to segment traffic coming from AI tools. Through this step-by-step guide, you will be able to apply effective filters and analyze more accurately the behavior of users coming from these sources.

What is Regex?

Before you begin, it is important to understand what a regular expression (regex) is and how it can benefit the analysis of traffic from AI tools.

A regular expression is a sequence of characters that defines a search pattern. In the case of GA4, you can use regex to identify and filter session sources and mediums that contain specific terms, such as “openai”, “chatgpt”, “gpt”, among others.

Step-by-step for filtering AI traffic in Google Analytics 4

1: Access your GA4 account

Open your Google Analytics 4 account and select the property you want to analyze.
From the side menu, select Reports and then Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition.

2: Add a filter to the traffic report

In the Traffic Acquisition report, click the funnel icon (at the top of the page) to add a filter.

Under “Select dimension,” choose Session source/medium.

Why this dimension? It allows you to filter traffic according to the source and medium of the sessions, making it the ideal point to apply regular expressions (regex) that can identify specific sources, such as AI tools.

3: Choose the match type

In the filter, under “Match type,” select the option “matches regex.”

Importance of this choice: Regex matching offers the flexibility to use complex text patterns to capture specific sources, which simple filters do not allow. This is essential to accurately identify traffic from AI.

4: Paste the regular expression (Regex)

Here is the regex you can use to filter AI traffic sources:

^.*\.openai.*|.*copilot.*|.*chatgpt.*|.*gemini.*|.*gpt.*|.*neeva.*|.*writesonic.*|.*nimble.*|.*perplexity.*|.*google.*bard.*|.*bard.*google.*|.*bard.*|.*edgeservices.*|.*bnngpt.*|.*gemini.*google.*$

This regular expression filters session sources and mediums that contain keywords related to AI tools, such as openai, chatgpt, gpt, bard, among others.

5: Apply the filter and view the data

After pasting the regex, click Apply.
GA4 will now apply the filter, allowing you to view traffic data originating from AI in the reports. This will enable a more detailed analysis of user behavior from these sources.

6: Add AI sources one by one

After applying the filter and viewing the traffic results for the selected analysis period, the next step is to associate the AI source for a deeper investigation of the data.

How do we do this?

Alongside the traffic source results, click the + on the right side.

Next, the results for the respective sources will appear.

7: Analyze the data

With these filters applied, you will be able to observe how AI tools are influencing user behavior, such as conversions and interactions with your website.

Custom segments for a more detailed analysis

Although standard GA4 reports allow you to filter traffic with regex, you can also use the Explore functionality for a deeper analysis.

Creating custom session segments with regex allows you to further isolate traffic from AI tools and analyze interactions in greater detail.

Find out if you are overspending on your PPC campaigns and learn effective strategies to optimize your budget and maximize ROI.

Managing PPC campaigns is a bit like going to the supermarket when you’re hungry: everything seems like a good idea until you see the total bill. You’ve probably had those cold sweats when checking your campaign costs, but how do you know if you’re really overspending or just paying a fair price?

In this article, I will analyze clear signs that you might be wasting money and also teach you how to optimize your PPC campaigns to get the most out of every euro spent.

7 clear signs that you may be wasting money on PPC campaigns

Your CPA is too high

If your Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) is higher than what you should be paying for a customer, it’s a warning sign. Before panicking, assess:

Is the CPA above the profit margin you can support?

Does the customer lifetime value (CLV) justify the initial investment?

Solution:

Set a realistic CPA target based on your costs and CLV.

Analyze your campaigns’ CPAs and adjust budgets or pause campaigns that are not delivering results according to your CPA target.

Use automated rules to reduce or increase bids based on PPC campaign performance.

Obsession with generic keywords

If you have campaigns on Google Ads or Bing Ads and you’re spending a large part of your budget on overly broad keywords, it’s like throwing money to the wind and hoping it comes back as customers.

Solution:

Focus on long-tail keywords instead of broad, generic ones.

Adjust your keyword match types (exact and phrase) to avoid irrelevant traffic.

Regularly analyze search terms, identify patterns, and remove those that don’t make sense or aren’t bringing results.

Use negative keyword lists to avoid unnecessary spending.

You’re investing in devices that don’t convert

Are your ads getting lots of impressions on mobile, but conversions are mainly coming from desktop? You may be wasting budget on a device that isn’t delivering a return.

Solution:

Segment by device and adjust your bids based on performance.

Use Google Analytics to analyze conversion rate by device and adjust your budget.

Test responsive landing pages to ensure a smooth mobile experience.

If mobile isn’t converting well, test campaigns specifically for that audience and analyze whether the problem is user experience or the traffic itself.

Your ads are going unnoticed

If you have a low click-through rate (CTR), it’s likely that your ads aren’t capturing attention or that you’re attracting the wrong audience.

Solution:

Test multiple versions of your ads (A/B testing) and identify which elements increase CTR.

Use ad extensions to improve visibility in Google Ads (sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, etc.).

Adjust your messaging to highlight value and urgency, including clear CTAs.

Use Responsive Search Ads (RSAs) to allow ads to dynamically adjust to user searches.

You don’t have an optimized sales funnel

If your ads are driving traffic but leads aren’t converting, the problem may be in your sales funnel.

Solution:

Ensure your landing pages are relevant and optimized for conversion (A/B testing, page speed, improved UX, etc.).

Use email marketing automation for lead nurturing and follow-up.

Create remarketing campaigns to recover lost leads, segmenting by behavior (e.g., visitors who added to cart but didn’t buy).

Use remarketing lists for search ads (RLSA) to adjust bids based on users who have already interacted with your site.

You’re not using audiences properly

If your PPC campaigns are generic and don’t segment audiences based on user behavior, you may be wasting budget on cold leads.

Solution:

Use custom audiences based on website and CRM data (e.g., existing customers, frequent visitors, etc.).

Try lookalike/similar audiences to expand reach without losing quality.

Use custom intent segmentation to reach users who show interest in your products/services.

You’re ignoring scripts and automation

Managing PPC campaigns manually without using scripts or automation can lead to inefficiencies and budget waste.

Solution:

Use Google Ads scripts for automatic bid adjustments, detection of low-performing keywords, and other optimizations.

Set up automated rules for pauses and budget adjustments based on performance.

Conclusion

Spend well, not too much

PPC isn’t about spending less, but about spending better. If you’ve identified any of these signs in your campaigns, it’s time to review and optimize every cent invested.

With good CPA control, precise segmentation, and converting messages, you’ll ensure your PPC budget works for you—not against you.

Among the main trends are SEO for AI, voice search, a focus on user experience, and the increasing value of original, high-quality content. Learn more.

The way we find information online is constantly evolving, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the heart of this transformation. But how is AI shaping the future of SEO in 2025?

In this article, I will explore the main trends, tools, and practical strategies for those who want to stay ahead in the digital world without getting lost in the algorithm.

SEO Trends and Practical Tips for 2025

The AI Search Revolution

The integration of AI into search tools is redefining how users interact with search engines. Technologies like Google Bard and generative chatbots offer more accurate, personalized, and contextual answers. Before, if we searched for “how to make a cake,” we would receive 20 recipe links; now, we get a personalized recipe with suggestions.

For businesses, this means that answers to customer questions need to be clear and specific. A customer might search for “How to automate email campaigns?” and expect a complete answer, not just a list of tools.

Practical tip: Optimize your site for long-tail questions, focusing on specific topics that directly address user intent. Include examples or case studies that highlight practical solutions to common customer problems.

SEO for Conversational Searches

Voice searches and natural interactions are on the rise. Studies indicate that over 50% of searches will be voice-based by the end of 2025. This change requires optimization for more informal and conversational terms. After all, no one says “cheap restaurants Porto” to Google Assistant, but rather something like “Where can I eat without breaking the bank?” This means optimizing websites for natural questions.

Practical tip: Use direct questions and answers in your content. For example, add FAQs optimized with conversational keywords and offer detailed solutions to specific problems in your niche.

AI-Generated Content

Artificial Intelligence makes it easier to create content at scale, but it also raises concerns about quality and authenticity. Tools like Jasper AI help create well-structured texts, but they always require human review. After all, no one wants to sound like a robot on social media.

This means using AI to speed up content development, but ensuring that the content reflects the brand’s voice. For example, a company selling management software can use AI to create technical guides, but add a human touch with real-world application examples.

Practical tip: Use AI for initial tasks, such as generating ideas or article drafts. Make sure the final product includes personalization and context that resonates with your audience.

SXO: The Union Between SEO and UX

Attracting visitors is not enough; it’s essential that they have a good experience on the site. SXO (Search Experience Optimization) prioritizes user experience, making it a crucial part of any modern SEO strategy. Because no one stays on a site where the “buy” button is hard to find, as if it were a game of hide and seek.

This translates into creating an experience that combines clear information, intuitive navigation, and visible calls to action.

Practical tip: Improve site loading speed, optimize responsive design, and simplify navigation. Make sure users quickly find what they’re looking for and have a clear path to conversion.

Structured Data and Snippets

Structured data helps search engines better understand your content, increasing the chances of appearing in featured snippets.

Using structured data can mean highlighting specific solutions or services. For example, an events company can use schema markup to display details about dates, locations, and tickets directly in search results.

Practical tip: Tools like Google Search Console can help you check if your structured data is being interpreted correctly.

Conclusion

AI is redefining SEO in 2025, and those prepared to adopt these changes will lead in the digital world. By understanding the trends and implementing some of our practical tips, you can turn challenges into opportunities.

So, you already know the next step: update your SEO strategies today and explore how Artificial Intelligence tools can benefit your business. But remember, the future may be robotic, but creativity remains 100% human!

As a PPC Manager, I know that our work doesn’t end when we convert a customer who fits our business’s persona. Our real challenge is to maximize the lifetime value (CLV) of each customer.

An excellent way to do this is through upselling and cross-selling strategies, using not only paid campaigns but also marketing automation. In this article, I will show how PPC (pay-per-click) campaigns can be integrated with platforms like E-goi through email marketing, automation, and SMS to increase revenue and foster customer loyalty.

What is upselling and cross-selling?

Before diving into strategies, a brief explanation:

Upselling: Encouraging customers to purchase a more premium version or an additional product. Example: “For just €28 more, upgrade to our Pro service!”

Cross-selling: Offering complementary products. It’s like the classic “Would you like fries with your burger?” but in the digital world1.

How to use PPC campaigns to boost upselling and cross-selling strategies

Smart segmentation from the first click

One of the great advantages of paid campaigns is that we can precisely segment the audience we want to reach. Imagine we promote a free e-book through a Meta Ads campaign. Whoever clicks on that ad and downloads the e-book is a potential customer already interested in our services/products.

Strategy: Use UTM parameters to track the behavior of these leads and automatically segment them into a specific list on the E-goi platform. This allows you to send personalized campaigns to promote complementary or additional services to what the customer has already purchased.

Remarketing for hot leads

Remarketing is an excellent strategy for upselling and cross-selling. If someone has already interacted with your PPC campaign but hasn’t converted yet, we can use remarketing ads to re-engage that lead.

Example: If the user downloaded the e-book but hasn’t purchased a product/service, we can show them an ad with a special offer using a remarketing campaign on Google Ads or Meta Ads.

Automation funnels for upselling

Once a customer has made an initial purchase, we can use automation to suggest higher-value products or services. We’ll use the example of a cosmetics store, where the customer bought a 30ml perfume.

Example funnel:

Email (1 month after purchase):

After 1 month of buying the perfume, offer a 15% discount on the same perfume, but in a 45ml size.

Example email:

“We hope our perfume has made your days more special. With that in mind, we have an exclusive surprise for you: 15% off the 45ml perfume! With this larger size, you can enjoy your favorite fragrance for much longer. Don’t miss out!”

SmartSMS (1 week after receiving the email and not opening it):

Send a SmartSMS to reinforce the message that was sent by email and not opened by the customer.

Example SMS:

“Take advantage of the special offer to upgrade your perfume to 45ml with 15% off! More fragrance for less. Only until December 31st here (link).”

Cross-selling with omnichannel messages

On the E-goi platform, you can easily set up cross-selling campaigns using multiple channels to increase the average value per customer. Following the example of a cosmetics store, if a customer bought a facial cream, we can suggest complementary products.

Example strategy:

Promotional email (2 days after purchasing a facial cream):

Send an email suggesting a serum that complements the skincare routine, highlighting the benefits of using both products together.

Example email:

“ Elevate your beauty routine! Combine your new cream with our revitalizing serum and see amazing results. Use the code BEAUTY10 for 10% off the serum.”

SmartSMS follow-up (4 days after delivery):

A SmartSMS that reinforces the offer and creates a sense of urgency.

Example SMS:

“ Complement your cream with our favorite serum! 10% off only until tomorrow. Use code BEAUTY10. (link)”

Test, measure, optimize

To ensure your upselling and cross-selling strategies are working, it’s essential to measure results and adjust as needed.

Use Google Analytics 4 and the platform’s reporting tools to analyze metrics such as click-through rate (CTR), conversion rate, and open rate, among others.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different messages and channels. For example, you may find that SMS or email has a higher conversion rate for certain customer lists.

Conclusion

Integrating PPC campaigns with automation strategies is the most effective way to maximize the return on your paid campaigns. With an omnichannel approach, you can not only attract new customers but also significantly increase the value of each one through upselling and cross-selling.

I hope this article not only helps you optimize your paid campaigns but also inspires you to develop new automation strategies to boost your business’s conversions.

To maximize your strategies, I recommend using E-goi.

Are you ready to discover how paid campaigns can turn leads into loyal customers through automation?

In this article, I will guide you through the world of qualified lead capture, where a good paid campaign strategy is the gateway to an effective and results-driven automation funnel.

What is qualified lead capture?

Qualified lead capture is like preparing a gourmet recipe: we need the best ingredients (leads), the best tools, and, of course, a special touch of automation to make everything “delicious.”

In this sense, paid campaigns can be the starting point for creating automated funnels that help us turn clicks into customers.

Paid campaigns as the entry point for automation funnels

Imagine the following: we create a paid campaign on Google Ads, promoting a free e-book about email marketing. The magic begins when someone clicks on our ad and is taken to a UX/UI-friendly landing page.

After the lead signs up to receive the e-book, they not only get the material by email (from an automated email sequence), but are also added to an automation flow that can include SMS messages and push notifications to ensure they don’t disappear from sight. Automation, here, is the superhero of our story!

Building funnels with automation

Now comes the fun part: how can we use automation to turn a PPC click into a highly qualified lead?

It’s simple! The lead enters the funnel, where we start sending relevant content, such as segmented emails, SMS, and even push notifications. The key is in the ability to personalize each interaction according to the user’s behavior on our site.

For example, if the lead opens the email but doesn’t click, we send a reminder by SMS: “Hey, we noticed you haven’t checked out our e-book yet! Take a look here.”

And everything can be automated, so we don’t have to chase each lead individually. The heavy lifting is done by automation; we just get to watch the show, as if we were in the best seat in the cinema!

Segmentation for better lead qualification

We know that not all leads are created equal. Therefore, an important part of the qualified lead capture strategy is audience segmentation.

We can automatically segment leads according to their behavior in our funnel. Those who interact more with emails or click on certain links can be targeted for more advanced campaigns—for example, by offering an exclusive webinar or a free demo.

Here, PPC is the entry point, and the power lies in how we nurture and manage those leads over time. The integration of omnichannel campaigns (using email, SMS, push, and even social media) ensures that we are reaching leads where they are, at the right time, and with the right message.

Automating lead conversion

As the lead moves further down the funnel, qualified leads can be directed toward an irresistible offer.

Here, automation can work hand in hand with PPC, creating a series of email and SMS sequences that encourage conversion. For example, if someone has already downloaded the e-book and participated in the webinar, it may be the ideal time to send a 20% discount offer to try the platform.

And if the lead shows signs of hesitation? Well, remarketing on Meta Ads can work to keep them on the right path and close the deal. This way, the automation cycle never stops—we’re always keeping the lead engaged, nurturing the relationship, and working toward conversion.

Conclusion

Ultimately, using paid campaigns for qualified lead capture and integrating those leads into automated funnels isn’t just a good idea—it’s the most efficient way to increase conversions.

In summary, when planning your next PPC campaign, keep in mind that the real goal goes beyond just generating clicks. We need to nurture those leads and turn them into loyal customers through a well-structured sales funnel. Remember: building a sales funnel doesn’t have to be boring.
